Hello World

It is traditional for the first program by a new programming student in any programming language, or the first program run on a new platform, to be a simple declaration of text: Hello World.  It may be fancier, but it will not be simpler.


So, without further ado...

Ever since the mid-90s or so, the trend in gaming has been to include systems about what sets your character apart - whether that was AD&D2 kits, or D&D3+ Feats, or Advantages/Disadvantages in GURPS and Merits/Flaws in Storyteller games, it was a fairly sharp deviation from the early D&D way of handling those either as one-offs with GM-arbitrated mechanical effects, or as nonexistent.  WEG's d6 Star Wars didn't really get into this - with a couple of notable, species-based exceptions like Noghri martial arts - but probably would have with a couple more years' development, as the use of Feats by the same writing team working for WOTC on d20 Star Wars demonstrates. On Expertise and Efficiency

Recently, because of my parallel study of Fiore and shinkage, I've been running into a problem with the "official" version of both, as demonstrated in lessons or manuscripts.  Both schools teach a philosophy of reacting to openings, rather than forcing an outcome, so I feel there's adequate basis for discussion.  The basic problem is this: There are a number of critical lessons that aren't taught, either directly or by implication.  They both do a good job of teaching, by implication, things like measure and timing, because you drill to find the exact moment and distance in which you can Do The Thing.  They also assume that there are fractional differences in skill or ability between two combatants, such that a truly "even" fight never occurs.  What they   don't  teach is what happens when a fight is too close to call. Brewing - Small Batch - Hot, Steamy Bochet of Love

It's Valentine's Day, and like many couples, my wife and I spent it doing things together.  Specifically, we spent it starting a batch of bochet out of an extra half-gallon of mesquite honey we had lying around.  For those who don't know, bochet is a mead made from caramelized honey.  This was a much more technically demanding task than the simple 3:1 and yeast that we'd been doing, or even throwing fruit in there and hoping it sticks.  Caramelization was the complication; the recipe was still 3:1, aiming at two gallons, using standard champagne yeast.
